 2010 Conference Presenters

Luz Shosie writing about herself and Ned Vare:

As we looked into alternative schools, I came to the writing of John Holt and was convinced that “schooling” was unnecessary.

Our son Cassidy was born in 1979. As he grew, we looked for homeschooling friends. We found that most support groups were focused on what curriculum to use, how to “get” kids to do math, etc. We formed Unschoolers Unlimited in order to encourage ourselves and each other to trust children to learn and grow in their own way. We have continued this support group long after our son has flown the nest. We hold gatherings, publish a newsletter and send out information about self directed learning to all who request it. We get lots of emails and phone calls and the highlight of any day is a parent calling to say they’re taking their kids out of school.
We gathered many of our articles into a book titled Smarting Us Up: the Un dumbing of America. We included the story of Cassidy educating himself without schoolbooks, tests, grades, etc. We love speaking at homeschooling meetings and conferences and are always inspired by parents who take responsibilty for their children rather than turning them over to the government to raise.
Ned & I created a wonderful home, garden, community, life in CT on two acres of land. We’ve lived here longer than either of us ever lived anywhere else. Ned died here at home in July 09 after a long illness. It was my honor and privilege to help ease his passage. And we were blessed with the help, love, and support of our family, friends, and Hospice home care.
I study and teach t’ai chi, practice yoga and meditation, belong to a food coop and stand on the town green every Saturday in a peace vigil. Cassidy is the proprietor of Bespoke Bycles; he and his wife Kim live in Brooklyn, NY.

Kelly Lovejoy and her military husband, Ben, had a very traditional life in Columbia, SC until the day they decided to take their older son, Cameron (now 21), out of private school at the end of sixth grade. The Lovejoy's younger son, Duncan, just turned 13 and is enjoying unschooling teenage-hood and all its freedom.

Kelly started the Live and Learn Unschooling Conference (which has blossomed into more conferences than one family can attend in a year!) as well as the School's Out Support Group for unschoolers in SC and the Third Option School's Out Support Accountability Association for homeschoolers in SC.

Nancy Huffman
I begin homeschooling my two sons in 1985 when they were 8 & 5. I homeschooled my older son through elementary school, and he attended public high school. My younger son was homeschooled until he graduated high school. My younger son had trouble learning to read so I took Orton-Gillingham tutor training to learn how to teach him to read. Later, I learned the Lindamood-Bell tutoring techniques and worked for a summer in the L-B clinic in Atlanta. After my son graduated high school, I started tutoring other people's children and have worked with many homeschooled children tutoring math  and the language arts- reading, spelling, handwriting, etc. A few years ago, I started exploring other ways to help make learning easier and studied Brain Gym. The last 2 years, I've been studying a program to help kids called LEAP (Learning Enhancement Acupressure Program).

Jennifer J. Gowan is mom to 3 daughters (07/94; 11/96; 12/99), 4 dogs, 6 cats, and several other critters that come and go. She began to realize that we ARE what we eat when the girls’ father discovered a sensitivity to dairy products shortly after they were married. But it wasn’t until 7 years later, when doctor #7 suggested that perhaps the reason for her then 3-year-old daughter’s chronic illnesses, slow development, behavioral issues, and possible  autism diagnosis, was the food she was eating, that Jennifer discovered the Gluten-Free, Casein-Free diet. That is when the fun started for this family – multiple food sensitivities were found to be affecting the girls’ behavior, learning, and health, and slowly over the course of several years, via food diaries, observation, and trial-and-error, the family’s diet was streamlined and refined.

Jennifer graduated from William and Mary in 1991; she acquired NC Teacher Certification through UNC-Charlotte in 1993, and taught for a time in the Mooresville public school system. Jennifer has most recently worked full-time in food service, in addition to homeschooling her daughters, running around on field trips, and frequently eating out!

Jennifer says: It is possible to improve your children’s behavior and ability to learn with a few simple, easy-to-manage changes in their diet. You ARE what you EAT!

Caren Knox-Hundley
I'm an unschooling mom in Charlotte, NC, living and learning with my two boys, Evan (17) and Seth (11). We're in our 10th year of unschooling, and love the life we're creating. I started out as an attachment parent, and briefly detoured from that when Evan became "school age", and he went to a charter school for first and second grades. Thank heavens I listened to my gut and heart and discovered unschooling! It's a wonderful continuation of a deeply connected life, and has led to more personal growth than I ever could have imagined - while turning every idea I had about parenting and learning on its head!
I also facilitate drum circles, and am a reiki master and intuitive reader. You can contact me through my sitehttp://www.intuitiveartshealing.com/
